George Hurrell (Photographer)

George Hurrell (1904-1992) was a photographer who made a significant contribution to the Golden Age of Hollywood’s depiction of Hollywood glamour during the 1930s and 1940s.

Hurrell, who was a household name during the ’30s and ’40s, was famous for photographing the biggest Hollywood stars at MGM, Warner Bros. and Columbia Studios. His striking black and white images were used as promotional stills for some of the biggest films of the era.

His photographs have been featured in major exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C.; the Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

George Hurrell and his photography are featured  topics in a number of major publications and a documentary film.

Speed Racer®

Speed Racer is the adventures of a young race car driver, his fabulous car, and his close-knit group of family and friends. Originally a Japanese comic strip called “Mach Go Go Go,” the animated series Speed Racer has now become a cult classic and one of the most popular “Japanimated” series to hit the U.S. airwaves. Featuring Speed and his ultimate driving machine the Mach 5, Speed Racer combines racing with intrigue. Joining Speed is an unforgettable cast of characters, including Mom and Pops Racer, girlfriend Trixie, little brother Spritle and his pet monkey Chim Chim, mechanic Sparky and the mysterious Racer X.

Speed Racer began as a Japanese “Manga” entitled Mach Go Go Go created by Tatsunoko Productions in 1966. In 1967, the 52 episodes of the series were dubbed into English and syndicated nationally on television. For nearly 20 years, Speed Racer ran in the afternoons five days a week. During this time the world of Speed Racer was deeply etched into the memories of millions of youngsters who would rush home from school to see the show.

Pancho Barnes

Pancho Barnes (1901-1975) is considered by many to be one of the 20th century’s greatest American characters. During her lifetime, Pancho was renowned for her individuality, outsized personality, creativity, entrepreneurship, humor, generosity and integrity.

A legend in the aviation community, she was one of the first female pilots to be licensed in the United States and one of the most respected pilots of the Golden Age of Flight. She was a renowned stunt pilot, performing in several major films of both the silent and sound eras, including Howard Hughes’s influential 1930 epic Hell’s Angels. Pancho later founded one of the first unions in Hollywood and she holds the distinction of being Lockheed’s first female test pilot. Pancho became the “Fastest Woman on Earth” in 1930, when she beat the world’s speed record set by flying ace Amelia Earhart.

Barnes gained international fame when she founded the Happy Bottom Riding Club at what is now Edwards Air Force Base in California. Club members included heads of state, high ranking military, actors, actresses, writers and artists. Members could fly into her FAA approved airport, attend rodeos at her championship stadium, ride horses, dance, drink, eat and then decide to do it all over again by checking into her hotel.

The Emmy award-winning documentary film  The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club has screened on most American Public Television stations, ABC-TV Australia, prestigious film festivals and is available on DVD.

The new award-winning documentary  film Breaking Through The Clouds, The First Women’s National Air Derby documents the experience of the aviatrixes, including Pancho Barnes,  whom participated in the first Women’s Transcontinental Air Race (Dubbed the Powder Puff Derby by columnist Will Rogers).

Happy Bottom Riding Club

The Happy Bottom Riding Club, founded by Pancho Barnes, was located at what is now Edwards Air Force Base in California. Club members included heads of state, high ranking military, actors, actresses, writers and artists. Members could fly into her FAA-approved airport, attend rodeos at her championship stadium, ride horses, dance, eat, drink and then decide to do it all over again by checking into her hotel. During the height of the Happy Bottom Riding Club’s success, there were over 9,000 members worldwide.

The Happy Bottom Riding Club and Pancho Barnes were dramatized as part of the Academy Award-winning classic film, The Right Stuff.

13 Black Cats

The 13 Black Cats were a troupe of flamboyant stunt pilots who defied both superstition and the odds of survival during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Possessing the nine lives of their namesake, the 13 Black Cats performed death-defying aerial stunts and advertised their skills for the film industry with the slogan “Anything for a price.” Each member of the 13 Black Cats formulated a nickname so that the number of letters in their name would total 13. The troupe would become world famous and the most-photographed aerial daredevils of all time.
